Why Should All Motorcyclists Consider Taking a Safety Training Course?

September 25, 2018/in Uncategorized /by damg

If you recently received your motorcycle endorsement in the state of Indiana or your motorcycle learner’s permit, now would be a good time to take advantage of Indiana’s Ride Safe program that is offered within the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The reason motorcyclists are always encouraged to participate in safety programs is because the more they educate themselves, the less chance of them engaging in a severe or fatal motorcycle accident.

If you weren’t aware, motorcyclists are some of the most vulnerable individuals out on the roadways today. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), “motorcyclists are much more likely than passenger car occupants to die or become injured in a crash” especially those that are less experienced with riding. In 2016, the fatality rate per 100,000 registered motorcycles was 60.90, according to the III. And because we have witnessed just how serious motorcycle crashes can be and how they can affect your life as many of our clients have been involved in these types of accidents, we are sharing with you some information as to where you can find these safety training courses and the benefits associated with taking them.

How can I find a local training course?

The State of Indiana website has a tool available for individuals to use who are interested in finding a state-approved program in their area. If you are in Gary or Hammond, the closest training course provided is currently located at:

Calumet Harley Davidson

10350 Calumet Avenue

Munster, IN 46321

Now, you can also conduct a search of your own by taking advantage of the tool the site provides. To look up a training course that is offered in a city or county of your choice, simply click here to start your search.

What are the benefits of going through a motorcycle training course?

There are different types of courses offered and if you choose to partake in the Entry Level Motorcycle Safety Course, you can expect to learn the following:

  • Learn about the different types of motorcycles that are available to purchase.
  • Layout and operation of the basic controls.
  • Types of safety gear worn for protection and comfort.
  • How alcohol and other drugs impair a rider’s ability to operate their bike.
  • You will also get the opportunity to get hands-on and learn about certain techniques that help with straight-line riding, stopping, shifting, and turning.

Now, if you are an experienced rider who is simply looking to brush up on his/her safety skills, you may want to inquire about the Advanced Skills Motorcycle Training Course that is offered. The fact is, no matter how long you have been riding, things tend to change over time and it is important that you keep up with these changes.

Some of the topics that you can expect to be covered in this training course include:

  • How to balance the mental and physical aspects of safe riding.
  • How to manage risk.
  • Ways to increase visibility and optimize your lane position.
  • What your responsibility as a rider is. This might include new laws that have been passed that you may be unaware of.
  • Motorcycle inspection and care.
  • The effects of alcohol and other drugs on riding.

Although motorcycle accidents are rather common today, you don’t have to be the next victim if you choose to take the initiative to learn the skills necessary to be a safe rider. Now, if you have been involved in a motorcycle accident recently in Gary or Hammond, IN and suffered a severe injury, it would be in your best interest to contact an Indiana personal injury attorney at Marshall P. Whalley & Associates, PC as you may be entitled to compensation your insurer isn’t informing you about.

Motorcycle accident injuries tend to be some of the worst and you might find that it won’t be weeks or even months before you recover from them. Therefore, it is important you recover the maximum amount of compensation you are entitled to that can help you get through this time and pay for things like medical bills and lost wages for the time spent out of work.

To get an initial consultation scheduled to discuss your recent accident along with what your injuries might be worth, call our office today at 219-769-2900.
